The Himalayas in the past have been the birthplace of legendary mountaineers and continue to be a significant contributor to the adventure field. Presenting Bhavani Thekkada Nanjunda from Kodagu, an ambitious Mountaineer and Skier, aspire to be a shining name in this field.
She started her journey as an NCC cadet during her 1st-year graduation in a basic mountaineering camp in Manali in 2014, followed by many NCC/Army expeditions.
Adding to her experience of NCC camps is a flying camp All India Vayu Sainik Camp (AIVSC), Rajasthan in 2015. Being an active NCC candidate presented her an opportunity to participate in the Republic Day contingent-2016 for NCC in Rajpath, New Delhi.
An adventure enthusiast, She has been consistent in delivering remarkable involvements in the mountaineering field.

A certified grade 'A' AMC(ABVIMAS) and Special Basic mountaineer from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, one of the premier adventure institutes in India, She also completed her method of instruction from the same institute and was later appointed as a guest instructor for a year in HMI.
Being an instructor exposed her to rigorous climbing, enhancing her competency as a high-altitude climber. She also holds a record of the fastest Indian Woman to Summit Mt. Elbrus (5642m), Russia, the highest peak in the European continent.
Her zest of exploring outdoor potential incited interest in skiing, a Winter Olympic Sport. She completed her basic and intermediate skiing from Jawaharlal Institute of Mountaineering (JIM) and her advance from IISM, Kashmir. To further enhance her skills, she got trained in New Zealand and received an international certificate in skiing in 2019 which made Her the first Indian Woman to hold an International Ski Instructor Certificate. In 2020, she participated in numerous skiing events namely the National skiing & snowboarding championship held in Auli, the National Biathlon championship, and the Khelo India winter games in Gulmarg. She was awarded two bronze medals in 10km and 5km Nordic skiing and became the first south Indian to have received recognition.
In 2021 she represented and won Gold and Bronze medal (cross country skiing women’s senior) for Karnataka in the 2nd Khelo India National Winter Games held in Gulmarg, Kashmir from 26th Feb 2021 to 2nd March 2021.
She further enlisted some awards & recognitions :
- Commendation by the chief minister of Karnataka/2016.
- Commendation by the Director-General NCC India/2016.
- Achiever of the year by St. Agnes college/2018.
- Achiever of the year by Kodava cultural and sports club/2019.
She is on a mission to participate in the 2026 Olympics, now preparing endurance training, she needs immense support in sponsorship as the sport demands premium gadgets & gear.
